MINNEAPOLIS, MN, September 26, 2008, – As a continuation of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District's interest in improving the hydrology and habitat of the creek, the joint venture project with Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital will convert a channelized section of the creek, straightened out in the 1800's, to its natural meander. The new creek will still be easily navigable by canoes and provide a better environment for fish and other wildlife. In the spring, visitors to the site will enjoy the newly restored wetlands from an elevated boardwalk that will also be constructed as part of the project.
The project team consists of Inter-fluve, Inc. as the lead designer with Howard R. Green providing the design and engineering for the boardwalk. Knutson Construction Services is the Construction Manager overseeing the excavation by Rachel Contracting and creek bank construction and wetland planting by Prairie Restorations Inc. Lipe Brothers will be providing the installation of hundreds of helical piers and KCS will provide the carpentry to construct the boardwalk.
