MnDOT District 6 Maintenance Facility

The MnDOT District 6 Maintenance Facility was the second of three phases that will take place on the site. Site preparation was phase one of the project. The remodel of the existing facility with a two floor addition for office space will be phase three.

We bid on this project in March of 2011 and were awarded the job in late April. We began by removing three buildings, relocating a storage building and grinding and removing more than 1 million sq. ft. of asphalt and concrete. More than 99% of waste materials generated were either recycled or reused. Soil corrections and caissons for the new facility were the next step of the project. We brought in more than 47,000 tons of granular material and had 124 3- and 5-ft. caissons installed.

The building is heated by 144 vertical geothermal wells that are 180 ft. deep. Natural gas fire boilers and unit heaters act as backup. A natural gas-powered emergency generator was also installed.

The new facility is 122,000 sq. ft., which encompasses vehicle storage, a bridge shop, a sign shop, two wash bays, a preventative maintenance bay, a vehicle maintenance facility, inventory, maintenance staff offices and common areas. We installed six stationary vehicle lifts inside the building that have a capacity to lift up to 60,000 lbs. and six overhead cranes.

In addition to the new maintenance facility, we built a 9,000 sq. ft. storage building used to house seasonal equipment; a 16,000 sq. ft. fabric covered hoop building with precast bunker walls that will hold 10,000 tons of salt; a 1,500 sq. ft. wood framed building for making liquid brine used on roads for ice control; 7,500 sq. ft. of storage bunkers for housing various material; and a six dispenser fuel station.
