Hubert H. Humphrey Terminal Parking Ramp

Completion of the $90 million parking ramp, which houses more than 4,500 cars at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport, was an all-out race from the beginning. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) had an aggressive 13-month schedule for a project that would typically take two to three years. Knutson's craftspeople worked 8—16 hour days in temperatures that went from 95 to below zero with no lapse in productivity or quality.

The project was part of a multi-phased plan developed eight years earlier as part of MAC's objective to increase traveler and employee parking. It was regulated by eight separate project milestones ranging from demolition of the old ramp through roadwork and construction of the light rail station. Throughout the project Knutson implemented over 200 owner directed changes and requests, impressing the owner and construction manager with their productivity. The eight-story ramp has two helixes and an 11-story core elevator tower, 1,600 columns and an almost unfathomable amount of concrete—approximately 72,500 cubic yards. That's an estimated 7,300 to 8,500 trucks of concrete.
