Completion of the $90 million parking ramp housing more than 4,500 cars at the Hubert H. Humphrey Terminal at Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport was an all-out race from the opening bell for the 140 Knutson craftspeople and staff assigned to the project. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) had an aggressive 13-month schedule for a project that would typically take two to three years. To meet the deadline, Knutson craftspeople worked 8 to 16 hour days in temperatures that went from 95-degree heat at the onset of the project to zero and below, with no letup in productivity and quality.

The project was part of a multi-phase plan envisioned eight years earlier as part of the MAC's long-range objective to meet the demands of a growing airport facility and the need for increased traveler and employee parking. It was regulated by eight separate project milestones ranging from demolition of the old ramp, through roadwork and construction of the light rail transportation station. Throughout the project, Knutson managed over 200 owner directed changes and proposal requests, managing to impress the owner and construction manager with their pace and productivity.

The eight-story ramp has two helixes and an eleven-story core elevator tower, 1,600 columns and an almost unfathomable amount of concrete - approximately 72,500 cubic yards. That's an estimated 7,300 to 8,500 trucks of concrete.
