Carolyn Wood Named a Finalist for Top Women In Construction

Minneapolis, MN – 03/08/23

In late January 2023, Finance & Commerce announced its finalists for their 2023 Top Women in Construction awards. Carolyn Wood, Labor foreman at Knutson Construction, was among the nominees in the Outstanding Craftswoman/Tradesperson category.

Each woman announced as a finalist for the award is recognized for their innovative approaches to industry development, community involvement, and business integrity. The awards exist to celebrate women in the construction space and their work’s impact within the industry.

Carolyn’s commitment to her career is obvious. After completing an apprenticeship program and being named a journeyman, she obtained her OSHA30 certification on her own merit. She has advocated publicly for young adults to join the construction space post-graduation and regularly attends Knutson-sponsored events, especially those that involve other women. Carolyn’s work ethic, ability to connect with others, and dedication to safety, as well as providing positive experiences to other women on the jobsite were large factors in her nomination.

These attributes also contributed to her being named as a finalist for the Minnesota Chapter of the LIUNA (Laborers’ International Union of North America) Laborer’s Safety Driven Award in May 2022.

“While on projects, [Carolyn] has a clear sense of what needs to be done and handles it with a positive attitude,” said Sean Dols, General Superintendent at Knutson. “Not only does this ensure a safe and productive job site, but it also sets the tone and a high bar for other employees and their performance and mindset.”

Relationship-building is a favorite part of the job for Carolyn, too. When asked about her favorite Knutson project she’s been a part of, she mentioned the St. Francis Emergency Department Addition in Shakopee.

“Whether we were doing demo, pouring concrete, or doing finishes, we all worked together, communicated well, and kept things fun,” said Carolyn. “Right before we left, one of our contacts from the hospital approached me and said she was going to miss us because we had become like family during our time there.”

Winners in each Top Women in Construction category will be announced at a Celebration of Women in Construction gala event at Quincy Hall in NE Minneapolis on Saturday, March 11.

Please join us in congratulating Carolyn on this distinct honor!
