In order to better serve the local community more efficiently and to optimize patient care delivery, the Allina Health Board of Directors approved an aspirational vision known as the North Metro Market Plan. This plan integrates Mercy Hospital and Unity Hospital into a “1 Hospital - 2 Campus” alignment. To achieve this transformational goal, Mercy Hospital chose the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) approach to attain a collaborative, trusting, and rewarding outcome with their design and construction partners. HDR and Knutson integrated collective design and construction capabilities and created the MercyALIGNED team. The reconfiguration plan was implemented over a three year period of time, with the project scope including: Interior renovations and additions, Surgery addition, New hospital entry, Intensive care remodel, Central utility plant expansion, Ortho-spine remodel, Central sterilization addition, New parking ramp combined with a grand entry to the hospital.

Recent Projects

Mercy IR #2

Immediately after completion the successful expansion and renovation project, Mercy chose to partner with Knutson again for their new IR #2 addition. Knutson was brought in during the preconstruction phase to assist the owner and design group with schedule and alternate pricing options. At the beginning of the project there was an aggressive equipment delivery date chosen and we are proud to say this project was delivered on time and under budget.

Our Technology

Project Innovation

Mercy Hospital Expansion & Remodel is a complex, multi-phased project that expands the existing ORs, provides a new emergency department entry, and included the construction of the adjacent new parking ramp–all while maintaining operations. The VDC team was engaged early on during design and preconstruction, transitioning to construction as the project progressed. Major effors included coordination of OR equipment and boom supports. Modeling also directly benefited Knutson self-perform formwork for the parking ramp and model mapping of the project phases.

"Knutson understands the value that is needed in healthcare construction and they helped us build high-quality facilities to meet our needs, while partnering with the Owner and other trades to maintain the budget. Construction is complex and the Knutson team delivers this very effectively."

Our Technology

Added Value

1) Coordination with medical equipment and location of boom supports relative to structure and MEP systems

2) A 3D model was used for Knutson's self-perform concrete efforts creating sequencing drawings and tying into pour schedules

3) Due to the sensitivity of noise disruption in the existing hospital approximately 75% of mechanical hanger embeds were installed prior to concrete pour to reduce extent of post-pour drilling
